Arrival in Tynemouth

Arrive in the charming coastal town of Tynemouth, where your adventure begins. Settle into your hotel and enjoy the sea breeze before tomorrow’s first step on the trail.

Day 02 :

Wallsend to Newburn / Heddon on the Wall

Start at Wallsend, home to Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum. Walk along the River Tyne, passing the Millennium Bridge, the modern Sage Building, and the Baltic Arts Centre. Continue through Newcastle’s vibrant heart before reaching peaceful countryside on the city’s edge.

Day 03 :

Heddon on the Wall to Humshaugh

Enjoy a walk through Tyne Valley Country Park, then up to Heddon. The trail flows into green countryside dotted with Roman towers and milestones. Descend into the North Tyne Valley, where the pretty villages of Wall, Chollerford, and Humshaugh await.

Day 04 :

Humshaugh to Twice Brewed

Step into Northumberland National Park, where sweeping views open over moorlands and valleys. Pass the haunting Brocolitia Fort before the trail climbs onto the dramatic Whin Sill escarpment. Visit the superbly preserved Housesteads Fort, and end your day in Twice Brewed, with views that take your breath away.

Day 05 :

Twice Brewed to Lanercost

Continue along the rugged cliffs of Winshield Crags, passing Vindolanda, Great Chesters Fort, and the Roman Army Museum. The route leads through the welcoming villages of Greenhead and Gilsland, each filled with character and history.

Day 06 :

Lanercost to Carlisle

Walk past Birdoswald Fort, perched high above Irthing Gorge. Follow the trail as it dips into farmlands and gentle parklands, through Walton and Irthington, before arriving at the historic border city of Carlisle – once a strategic Roman stronghold.

Day 07 :

Carlisle to Bowness on Solway

Your final stage is a dramatic contrast: from the River Eden to the wide-open salt marshes of the Solway Firth. Gaze south to the Lake District mountains and north to Scotland across the water. This is the perfect finale to your Roman adventure.
